The seafront promenade along Muttrah Bay. Best at sunrise and in the evening, when families come out for a walk.

The old fort on the rock above the bay. Climb up for the best view of the corniche. It is usually open in the mornings.

The old covered market: frankincense, silver, fabrics and Omani halwa. Shops open in the morning and again from late afternoon until late; midday is quiet. Friendly bargaining is normal.

A small museum about Muttrah’s history in a restored old house. Closed on Fridays and over midday.

The park with the big incense-burner monument on the hill. A lovely evening walk along the water.

Go early in the morning to see the day’s catch arrive.

A museum of Omani heritage: traditional dress, jewellery, weapons and old photographs of Muscat.

The best introduction to Oman’s history. Open most days from mid-morning; there is an entry fee.

The ceremonial palace with its blue and gold front, between the Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts. You see it from outside.

A long sandy beach for a swim or a sunset walk.

A beautiful building. Check the programme for a performance or a guided visit.

Open to visitors on weekday mornings, not on Friday. Cover shoulders and knees; women also cover their hair. Entry is free.
